It is that time of year. After a two year Covid related absence the return of the GardenStateHSWrestling All-Star Classic is upon us. Emanating from North Hunterdon High School on May 7th at 1pm, the tournament is a charity event that brings together the best in Hunterdon, Morris, Sussex, Warren and for the first time ever Passaic County to compete in a one-day event to raise money. The addition of Passaic has rendered the old HWS vs. Morris format obsolete.
For this event it will be a battle of the reporters. Team Hofmann vs. Team Brower.
I will be the manager of the Pink Team while Joe Hofmann will be in charge of the
The event was started in 2013 at Madison High School and has evolved into an event that the wrestlers look forward to participating in. The proceeds will benefit the Hopatcong Pound Project and the American Cancer Society.
A huge first for this event is the first-ever Girls Match as North Hunterdon’s Jodi Holder will face 2022 165lb state champion Noelle Gaffney from High Point. Another headliner match includes a rematch of the 2022 NJSIAA 106 3rd place when Mount Olive’s Tyeler Hagensen faces North Hunterdon’s Logan Wadle. Finally in a battle of state medalists, Warren Hills Tyler McCatharn will wrestler North Hunterdon’s Brendan Raley.
As far as the regular part of the event, this might the most star-studded and talented roster yet. It is a 2-1-1 format with :30 overtime. There will be two semifinal matchups run concurrently with a 1st and 3rd place bout. The winner gets four points, 2nd three and so on.
The team that gets the most points gets to choose which charities receive the winners share of the donations. Tickets are available on the website on the main page link as well as at the door and are $15. Refreshments will be available for purchase and are provided by Just Subs in Annadale.
