Sussex Sweeps Their Second Tri Match in Four Days at RCSJ

DEPTFORD, NJ (January 26, 2025) – Sussex County Community College picked up their second sweep in four days by defeating Middlesex Community College 54-4 and the host Rowan College of South Jersey 52-6 on Saturday afternoon.

Compared to the tri match on Wednesday, this time around it was pretty uneventful for the Skylanders as their opponents combined for just five wrestlers. This led to a total of 15 victories by forfeit for Sussex.

Against Middlesex, who only had two wrestlers suit up, The Skylanders had Roman Citro, Chris Casale, Michael VanderMeulen, Thaylor Sibblies, Carlos Delgado, Aidan Hallowich, Jose Alvarenga Giron, and Shawn Pawlowski each take home six points with a win by forfeit. Mason Mericle and Ryan Flammer were the only two who saw actual competition.

Mericle suffered a 12-4 major decision loss against John Braun, but Flammer pinned his opponent in the second period of the heavyweight match to finish out the victory.

RCSJ only suited up three wrestlers and as a result only Citro, VanderMeulen, and Hallowich took part in an actual match. Citro won his match by tech fall 19-4 at 125, and VanderMeulen pinned his opponent at 141. However, Hallowich was pinned in his match at 165 and everyone else took a forfeit victory.

The past few days for the program has head coach Nick Barzano excited about what lies ahead. “The team is rising at the right time and we look forward to the tough schedule ahead,” Barzano said. “We just need to keep this momentum rolling.”

Next up for the Skylanders is another trip to East Stroudsburg University on Feb. 1 for a quad match before the GSAC Team Championship on Feb. 7. The quad match at ESU will start at 10 a.m.
